Join us in Baltimore for the Green Party National Convention
Would you like to attend the Green Party national convention that will be held July 12-15, 2012 in Baltimore, Maryland? This is a great opportunity to meet Greens from across America, attend workshops with experienced activists, and help select the Green Party nominees for President and Vice-president. You'll also get to enjoy historic Baltimore and its lively waterfront. For information on how to apply to join the Massachusetts delegation, reply to John Andrews,
Our hosts, the Baltimore City Green Party, will welcome us to enjoy Baltimore, a city famous for its beautiful waterfront, world-class museums, three centuries of history and much more. The actual convention meeting will be held on the campus of the University of Baltimore. In addition to nominating our presidential ticket, the convention will approve the 2012 Green Party platform and consider other matters to set the stage for a Green surge in 2012. Further information on the convention will be posted at http://www.gpconvention2012.com.
Conference Committee meeting on "Habitual Offender" ("Three Strikes") legislation
Thursday, January 12 at 2:30 pm, 4th Floor Rom 413. Judiciary conference committee members meet to reconcile bills which already passed (H3818 and S2080). Senate bill delays parole eligibility. House bill allows any of 688 felonies, including many non-violent offenses, to count toward the "3 strikes." See http://blackstonian.com for details, and points below excerpted from materials prepared by Prisoners’ Legal Services.
This legislation will have grave impacts on communities of color, and burden the state's taxpayers with least $75 million in additional costs -- without increasing public safety. "Three strikes" bills in other states have been proven to be very costly and ineffective.
Come testify on foreclosure legislation
Judiciary Committee will hear testimony on foreclosure bills (preceded by rally). Call your representative if you can't come. Massachusetts needs mandatory mediation and judicial foreclosure. See MAAPL website for text, flyer, and helpful documents. Wednesday, January 11 at 1 pm in Room B1.
"Occupy the Caucus" focuses on Obama betrayal
In Iowa, the Occupy protesters decided that the Democrats are a bigger problem than the Republicans -- because the Democrats promised to be the progressive voice for the people, and have betrayed us instead. We all knew the Republicans serve the top 1% -- we didn't expect better. But President Barack Obama has proven that the Democrats are no better -- and they were our great hope for the future.
We agree! That's why we say: IF YOU'RE SEEING RED, DON'T STAY BLUE -- VOTE GREEN!
Jill Stein joins Wisconsin protest
Group breaks Scott Walker's protest shackles
On December 16, 2011, Dr. Stein and her supporters joined hundreds of Wisconsinites at their State Capitol building. Governor Scott Walker had passed protest laws requiring, for any outdoor public gathering of more than 100 people, a permit, 72 hours notice, and payment of police costs. But in the face of yet another act of collective defiance, the Scott Walker administration folded, and failed to enforce its new policy banning unpermitted rallies at the State Capitol. Greens provide a real alternative for education excellence
Alan Singer's Huffington Post article expresses the disappointment among progressives in President Obama's education plan, which bows to corporate interests and substitutes test-teaching for broad learning and critical thinking. He goes on to say:
White House role in blocking climate progress "unforgivable"
Dr. Jill Stein, Green Party presidential candidate, issued a statement this morning regarding the recently ended Durban climate change talks, denouncing President Obama for continuing to block action.
