Dear Owen,

*MassEquality is looking for union members who oppose writing discrimination
into the Constitution<http://www.mebuilder.com/12/lt/t_go.php?i=405&e=MjcxNDI5MA==&l=http://www.massequality.org/action/labor.php>
*, and we are launching a new section on our website devoted to labor
outreach.

The labor movement has always stood at the forefront of economic and social
justice issues. Organized labor has successfully fought for legal
protections for all workers, both in legislatures and at the ballot box.
Civil marriage provides working families with hundreds of rights, benefits
and protections, and *several labor unions have taken strong stands in favor
of equal marriage rights and against discrimination*. To read the resolution
of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) on marriage equality,

.

In just a few weeks, on May 10th, Massachusetts legislators will take up a
new constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage and provide no
protections whatsoever for same-sex couples and their families. If the
proposed amendment receives the votes of only one-quarter of legislators
this year and next, it will go on the ballot in November 2008. *If this
amendment becomes law, many workers will immediately lose access to critical
employment benefits that unions have fought hard to protect*, including but
not limited to health insurance, pensions, workers compensation, and family
medical leave.

The Massachusetts Legislature should not jeopardize those rights by putting
them up for a popular vote. We need the help of fair-minded union members
who support equality to defeat this new discriminatory amendment and protect
equal marriage rights for generations to come. *If you belong to a labor
union, please help us by visiting

.*

Sincerely,

Matt McTighe
