All I do on my phone calls is say:

"Hi, this is Brian O'Connell from the Green-Rainbow Party. We are doing a 
membrship renewal and fundraising drive and I'm hoping that you can renew 
your member ship this year".

That is the main pitch. Simple, fast, non threatening and easy. It has been 
very successful.

If they say YES and they want to renew I direct them towards the site to use 
their credit card or I send them a donation form (w/ a ltetter and the GRP 
brochure) in the mail. Sometimes people also say that they will send in the 
reminder that they have received in the mail. I also engage in a little 
light conversation to see how people are feeling about the GRP if they go in 
that direction.

In the case of the 500$ I noticed that he had donated 300$ last time so I 
asked him if he was going to contribute at his usual level and he said, "I 
think that I'm goint to give 500$, we deserve it". I'm not sure if he 
actually ever did donate but he said to me over the phone that he was on the 
site. His name was David Ludlow (of JP).
