Be a diversity candidate! Recruit a diversity candidate!
At the next State Committee meeting, November 17 in Amherst, the
election for diversity representatives on the Administrative Committee
takes place. This is a position with serious responsibilities and it
is important that the slots be filled. If you qualify, we urge you to
become a candidate. We also urge all party members to encourage and
recruit candidates.
Here is some "who," "how" and "what," information.
WHO
The six AdCom members who were elected at the August State Convention
include one woman and five men; all Caucasian and straight; two fixed-
and/or low-income; ranging in age from 30s to 60s; two with pre-school
and school-age children; two from the Pioneer (Connecticut River)
Valley; four from Metropolitan Boston and suburbs.
Diversity considerations include and are not limited to gender, race,
sexual orientation, physical ability, age, region, and income level.
Clearly the new AdCom needs representation in most of these areas.
HOW
Any party member can be nominated by at least five other party
members. Nomination forms – which ask for basic information and a
short statement -- can be found under "Adcom Nomination Form" at
green-rainbow.org/AdCom/. They can be returned by fax; by mail; or at
the StateCom meeting. The diversity representatives are elected by a
two-thirds vote of the StateCom at the first StateCom meeting
following the State Convention. The diversity candidate does not need
to be a StateCom member and if the candidate does not attend the
meeting, s/he must select someone to speak on the candidate's behalf.
WHAT
The current Administrative Committee expects to hold in-person
meetings every six weeks and teleconference meetings halfway between
in-person meetings. Being explored are electronic ways to cut down
commuting distances even for in-person meetings. An AdCom member will
be considered to have resigned if they fail to attend four consecutive
AdCom meetings which occur at least a week apart, or if they miss more
than eight meetings a year which occur at least a week apart.
As described in the GRP bylaws, the duties of a diversity rep are:
1 – Work to increase the diversity of the general party membership and
to promote, encourage, and recruit diversity in the leadership of the
party.
2 – Build the party membership, development of local chapters, and
regional organizing where they live.
3 – Join either or both the "Membership and Diversity" and
"Communications and Media" working committees and work on newsletters,
the web site, and other party communications.
4 – Be a two-way communications conduit between AdCom and both their
region's StateCom members and their region's local chapters so all are
informed about events, issues for consideration, and decisions.
