Take a look at what is going on in your community!
In light of the numerous reported violent attacks on
transgender people in Minneapolis this summer and
fall, this event has taken on special significance for
some of us here in Minneosta this year.
Just a couple of weeks ago I attended a candlelit
vigil/march from District 202(a glbtiq youth drop in
center) to the local public hospital right through the
heart of downtown to protest the shooting of 19 year
old Tameka McCloud who was shot seven times including
some shots to the head by her nearly seventeen year
old boyfriend. Her boyfriend had always known she was
transgender but was afraid that his relatives were
going to find out that his girlfriend was transgender
and think he was gay.
130 people participated in the vigil/march organized
by friends of Tameka's from the glbtiq youth drop in
center. Most were teens with a sprinkling of adults
mostly from the transgender community.
Below are events for Transgender Day of Remembrance in
the twin cities to give you an idea of the kind of
events being held.

Student Cultural Center are co-sponsoring two events
this week to raise awareness around transphobic
violence:
MINCAVA 6th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance
Memorial Wall
November 15-22, 2004 Peters Hall Atrium, 1404
Gortner Ave., St. Paul Campus
(http://onestop.umn.edu/Maps/PetH/)
The MN Center Against Violence and Abuse (MINCAVA)
will display over 500 names and stories of people who
were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or
prejudice from 1972 to 2004. Please feel free to
bring any items to decorate the Memorial Wall to
commemorate the lives of those who have been killed.
The film, Boys Dont Cry will be shown from
11:30AM to 1:30PM Friday, Nov. 19 in Room 39, Peters

Attendees may bring lunch to the movie. Light
refreshments will be served.
