Invitation to Solidarity Fundraiser (Latino representation in Holyoke)

Friends, Colleagues, Educators and Organizers for Social Justice:

Please forward this email invitation to your lists.  This is a critical
moment
in Holyoke politics.  Our solidarity and financial support are urgently
needed
at this time.  Thank you in advance.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

INVITATION TO SOLIDARITY FUNDRAISER: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 2ND
PLEASE HELP ELECT GLADYS LEBRON-MARTINEZ TO THE HOLYOKE SCHOOL COMMITTEE!

You are invited to a fundraiser and party for Gladys Lebron-Martinez on
Sunday
November 2nd, 3-6 PM, at the home of Agustin Lao-Montes, 1335 Bay Road,
Amherst (see below for directions).

Come help celebrate and support longtime community organizer Gladys
Lebron-Martinez run for Holyoke school committee.  While more than 75% of
the public school children in Holyoke are Latino, there are currently NO
Latinos on the school committee.  Latino representation is long overdue.
There is no one more committed and dedicated to the welfare of all Holyoke
children than Gladys.

Gladys is running for school committee in Ward 1 which includes the
neighborhoods of Churchill and the Flats.  These are predominantly Latino
neighborhoods, yet the school committee representative from Ward 1 has been
the same Caucasian man for the past 8 years, and he's running again!  Gladys
has been a Holyoke resident for over 20 years, her children have attended
Holyoke public schools, and Gladys is a well respected community organizer
and
activist.  Please show your solidarity and support her campaign!

Gladys won the October 7th primary (thank you to everyone who supported this
first round).  Now our support is needed more than ever.  Elections are on
Tuesday, November 4th.  Her opponent has organized a strong campaign to
retain
his seat and keep the Latino voice out of Holyoke politics.

Come hear Gladys talk about her candidacy and the issues facing her
community.
We will celebrate Gladys' distinguished career as a Holyoke community
organizer and anticipate her victory on November 4th.  Light refreshments
will
be served.  Please feel free to bring your favorite beverage.

ALL FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED AT THIS TIME AND WILL BE
GREATLY APPRECIATED!  Your contributions will help cover the cost of renting
vans for transportation on voting day (November 4th) and the cost of radio
public service announcements.  Thank you in advance for supporting this
critical campaign.

If you are unable to attend the fundraiser and would like to contribute to
Gladys' campaign, please send your checks to:
