[statecom-discuss] Grace Ross Named IN NewsWeekly's

I am finally back on line after very severe health problems (lung cancer
which apparently they caught in time--we will see on monthly checkups.) This
may be an odd place to start anew with email but I simply want to agree with
Adam. I think we should be a lot more cautious about credit claiming (I was
disturbed in fact when Grace said early in campaign that Deval had swiped
the slogan (together we can)from her. I suspect Deval wasnt aware because
GRP wasnt yet on horizon.) I agree that Deval is now an icon (probably
undeserved and overblown--he certainly did too little too late on gay
marriage)--but let's go ahead with our own program. I liked Grace's campaign
stature a lot; I am impressed with the 18% that Jill got and the 14% for
Jamie. I like the fact that GRP is now on the map. For the sake of our own
party bldg let's not destroy that fact (and the renewed ballot status it
brings us) by bragging.
I love all of you and I still remain a registered Green. I feel great awe at
Grace, my former housemate, and her accomplishments. But I sometimes wish I
were a Maine resident where the party is far more mature and seasoned and
successful--and doesnt nitpick but simply goes on with its business. (They
were established in 1984 and they went thru the nasty stuff early on.) I may
in fact establish Maine residence in future but I still am teaching at BU
(for three more joyous years) and my friends warn me that while I have a
passion for Maine, I will miss the action here in Boston area.I will be back
in harness soon--I am now off of painkillers and feel pretty good except for
being very tired very often. (I wont be at Jan meeting--I just cant, espec
in light of western mass site. But I send you greetings and love and will be
active as soon as I can. Betts Zisk (former Middlesex rep and a very
convinced Green since 1986). BZ

Hi All -
Well, it's my impression that Deval worked very hard to stay out of the mud
on his own, even dismissing advice from his own team to go negative, not to
mention extreme goading by Healey. I think that there is widespread
admiration of him - bordering on awe - for staying above that fray. For
Grace to say publicly, whether true or not, that she is the one who deserves
the credit for his behavior defies belief, sounds as if she's out of touch
with people's perceptions and blowing a horn which isn't hers. I don't
know what Deval, Christy, Fox, et al. said about this (and I suspect many
people don't - if you have any of the quotes I'd be interested in seeing
them), but politically it sends an odd and unfavorable message.
As for editorial credibility, IN NewsWeekly may have its own reasons for
sounding delusional (e.g., an LGBT person stands up to the straight world),
or quite possibly didn't even connect the dots (it wouldn't be the first
time a newspaper's editorial writers missed something).
I just wanted to emphasize that I didn't say Grace was delusional, I said
she sounded delusional. As we know all too well, appearances count for a
lot in politics. I'm not attacking her, I'm only sharing my response to the
quote which I think creates a public perception problem and could bite us
later (but will probably be quickly forgotten). However, I think we should
be very careful about such statements in the future. Deval is an icon at
the moment, corporate toady though he may be - we will gain nothing by
claiming any credit whatsoever for his accomplishments.
Cheers,
Adam

I have to back Grace on this one. If that perception wasn't widely
accepted and would be percieved as delusional - then the writer/editors
wouldn't have used that quote. It would've hurt their own credibility
to have named someone delusional as their person of the year.
