Poetry For Peace and Social Justice:
Mission Statement of the Liberation Poetry Collective

We are a group of writers and educators from diverse ethnic,
socio-economic and
cultural provenances who joined hands on January 1st, 2001, to propagate
the
ideals we attach to poetry: that it can be a potent agent for change
while
  enlightening and entertaining the soul.

For us, poetry and the liberation from exploitation and oppression are
not two
parallel entities, but rather an organic whole, one tightly woven
endeavor. Given
that even poetry cannot live completely outside the materiality of human
experience, we believe that solidarity with and among peoples is at the
core of
the praxis of being. Our completeness depends upon our continual search
not
only for beauty and elation, but also for justice, for respect of the
integrity of the
Other, for equality of all human beings.

Liberation poetry is liberation of the soul, the rejection of
one-dimensional,
disfiguring post-modernist fads.We will tell the children the truth, as
Bob Marley
intoned, but we also open ourselves to learn from them. If our objective
is to bring
poetry to the streets, as Brenda Walcott suggests, then our poets will
work with all
peoples, embracing the rejected and the disenfranchised, learning to
expose and
to resist the mechanisms of political oppression and cultural
mystification.
We are the new visionary warriors, the new maroons, and our creed is one
of
human affirmation. We aim to launch a cultural insurrection that
brandishes and
celebrates poetry as a powerful weapon for resistance against
degradation, in the
pursuit of human freedom and justice.
