Subject: Israel Lobby Pushes Mass Sanctions Against Iran

The usual suspects are pushing a new bill in the State House aimed, as we
know, to stir up war propaganda against Iran. It has nothing to do with
human rights.

We have a chance to testify on this and/or submit written testimony for the
hearing this Thurs. I plan to testify. This is an opportunity not only to
oppose the war agenda of the Israel Lobby but also to protest their blatant
and routine manipulation of the political process locally and nationally in
the interest of Israeli foreign policy goals.

It's ironic that the bill is a proposed amendment to one originally passed
to promote a boycott of investment in Apartheid South Africa - which at that
time in the 1980's was an ally of Israel and so the folks pushing this bill
were silent or might even have ben opposed. (You can find the text through
the link in the email below.)

Forward this around to any people who might be interested or contact me
back. I am sending it to a bunch of individuals, not to any lists because -
who knows - they might get the police to declare martial law in the State
House that day. . .

Jeff

This message to alert you that the Joint Committee on State Administration
and Regulatory Oversight will on Thursday, April 10, 2008 be holding a
public hearing on H. 4270, An Act Protecting Pension Fund Investments from
the Global Securities Risks of Investments in Iran. The hearing is
scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in hearing room B-1 of the State House. Written
testimony may also be submitted; it should be addressed to the two Committee
chairman, Senator Dianne Wilkerson and Representative Antonio Cabral.
Representative Cabral is, incidently, the bill's sponsor.

Copies to Committee members, listed on the www.mass.gov/legis website, would
also be well placed. Testimony can be submitted electronically. The
website lists all committee members, and email addresses for chairmen and
all members. I would be personally grateful for a copy of any testimony
that you submit.

I know that this is short notice of the hearing, but there has been little
notice given. The hearing has not yet been publicized within the State
House. Ironically, I learned of it from JCRC, an external sponsor of the
bill. Please spread the word.

I have attached for your review both the proposed legislation and
committee's "summary" of the bill. I encourage you to read, too, a story
that appeared in Friday's Guardian:
http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/richard_silverstein/2008/04/israels_tehr
an_connection.html.
