From April 23 through May 28 Delta Air Lines flight attendants have the chance to vote YES to a union, the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA, AFL-CIO). The vote will take place through a phone and internet election process administered by the National Mediation Board (NMB), the Government body charged with union representation elections in the airlines industry under the Railway Labor Act. The recent merger announcement made by Northwest and Delta Air Lines makes union membership all the more important for Delta’s 13,400 flight attendants.
Delta flight attendants’ priority issues are:
  1. Job & Seniority Protections
By joining AFA-CWA, Delta flight attendants will have the chance to secure legal protection for Delta flight attendants’ seniority as well as protection under the AFA-CWA Constitution & Bylaws. AFA-CWA’s Constitution ensures date-of-hire seniority in a merger with another AFA-CWA carrier. By joining AFA-CWA, Delta flight attendants will automatically be covered by the AFA-CWA’s Constitution and will move forward to negotiate a legally binding contract that will protect their jobs, wages and working conditions.
 2. Restoration of Pay and Working Conditions
By joining AFA-CWA, a union with vast experience in post-bankruptcy negotiations, Delta flight attendants can position themselves to restore the reductions in their wages and working conditions they have experienced over the past several years. Represented groups, including Delta pilots, will move quickly at the bargaining table to win back what has been lost in bankruptcy. Without a union, Delta flight attendants will not have the opportunity to press for those improvements.
 3. Securing a Professional Voice for the Long Term
For too long, Delta flight attendants have had no say in their rates of pay, rules or working conditions and have had to accept whatever airline executives were willing to give them. Joining AFA will help Delta flight attendants to gain their rightful seat at the table. By joining AFA Delta flight attendants will win the right to negotiate over their own future and participate in the corporate decisions that profoundly impact their professional and personal lives.
Delta and Northwest flight attendants are working together to win this election for AFA representation at Delta. Delta flight attendants should have the right to debate the benefits of having union representation on their own, without interference from the company. But Delta is pursuing an anti-union campaign to interfere with the democratic process and convince its flight attendants not to join the union (read an article on Delta’s campaign at http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2008-03-26-delta-attendants_N.htm). Delta flight attendants have also reported incidents designed to intimidate and erode the growing support for AFA.
We need your help to let Delta flight attendants know that when they vote for AFA representation, they not just joining one union, they are joining with other workers across the country who will stand with them in their campaign for fair treatment.
One Easy Thing You Can Do to Support Delta Flight Attendants to Win AFA Representation
If you are flying Delta between April 23 and May 28 please greet your Delta flight attendant and let them know you support their effort to join AFA. The following is a suggested guide for your greeting.
   Good morning/afternoon/evening.
I wanted to thank you for your hard work to make today’s flight a safe and pleasant experience.
I also understand that you have a very important choice to make on your AFA election.
Joining my union was one of the best decisions of my life. It has given me a voice at work that means more respect on the job and the chance to enjoy a healthy work-life balance. I would never work again without a union contract.
I encourage you to vote YES for AFA as your union representative this month.
