Merelice,
I know of no way to cure us of addiction to conspiratorial thinking --
theory, behavior and convictions -- but had hoped to reduce its
destructive effects on the GPUS, as well as in the GRP. I am quite
familiar with the reality of conspiracies and their destructiveness to
the development of an ecological politics. The 'old left,' dedicated
to the efficacy of the "Correct Analysis," was always ready to engage
in conspiracies, mostly forgotten, against those whose analysis was
flawed. They had a great deal of leisure. The 'new left' was
dedicated to action, and did undertake a variety of actions requiring
secret plotting. But the yet to be realized effectiveness of the civil
rights movement, lay in the fact that the brilliance of its strategies,
and strategists, succeeded because of their design for open
confrontation with the opposition, readiness to work with that
opposition, and resist the temptation to demonize that opposition even
at the moments when the opposition sought ways to effectively destroy
and undermine the influence of King and his cohorts.
At this moment, I have doubts that we will succeed. But we could
easily take the risk to do so in Massachusetts. I cannot convince
people who are afraid, who have little or no idea of the place of
inclusiveness in ecological politics, who preach populism, and use
their presence in the party to promote highly personal agendas.
Good luck! I know why I am a member of the GRP, and apologize for the
ignorance of its would be protectors. I will be working in my precinct
to talk to voters. And the guardians of the integrity of the party
against the demonic agents of any outside force will do their best to
demonstrate our failings.
