Subject: [Locals] Statement on March to Abolish Poverty
To: locals at green-rainbow.org

Dear Green-Rainbow folks,

There has been some dissatisfaction about how much
input Green-Rainbow locals have regarding actions
taken by Statecom - the main decision-making body of
the Green-Rainbow Party at the State level.

(This includes the decision to sponsor, for the 2nd
year, the statewide March to Abolish Poverty - an
action decided by consensus at a Statecom meeting)

It is most unfortunate that some members feel that
they were not able to have sufficient input into the
goals or any other aspect of the March to Abolish
Poverty (see letter to Statecom members from our
friends in the Mystic River Green Rainbow Action
local).

So this is an area that we need to work on. Let's all
make the commitment to increase the participation of
locals in decision-making throughout the party, as is
indicated in our 10 Key Values. I'm convinced that
the commmitment to do this is there throughout the
Party, including Statecom.

At the same time however, we need to respect the hard
work that each of us, as volunteers, puts into taking
the political actions that we all care so deeply
about.

For many of us the actions that we are taking result
in great personal sacrifices (including financial
sacrifices), especially for those of us with less time
or financial resources available.

Therefore I would like to suggest that we try to be as
supportive as we feel comfortable with, when
considering the many different areas of
work that folks in the party undertake, even if our
process isn't perfect.

Let's support the March to Abolish Party with as much
vigor and positive energy as we can because it is an
action being taken by our sisters and brothers. And
it is an action that is consistent with our political
values.

Please give a phone call to the people marching,
encourage them, contribute funds, talk up the March,
and join the March when you can. This is a time that
we need to pull together and be supportive. (see
www.abolishpoverty.net, and note that the March is
from the 17th of June, Friday, to the 4th of July)

Whether the issue is supporting IRV, or land
development issues, or Palestinian human rights, or
campaigning for a candidate, or Abolishing Poverty or
distributing and talking up the Bridge, or fighting
the war,... we need to support each other as BEST we
can.

In this way we make the GRP a place where everyone
feels respected for and encouraged about the social
change work that she or he is trying to create, under
usually adverse and difficult conditions.

Ron Francis
