VIGIL TEMPORARILY EXPANDING TO FLORENCE
IN RESPONSE TO LOCAL GUARD DEPLOYMENT

Overseas deployment of the National Guard, always
controversial, has been an essential part of the
Administration's war in Iraq. Small towns, confronting
their losses of people and Guard services such as fire
fighting, are some of the loudest questioners of the
idea.

An Iraq deployment from the Florence National Guard
unit is expected mid-summer. In protest, the
Northampton Committee has temporarily moved part of its
Saturday vigil to Florence. Please join us as we vigil
this week on the grassy triangle on the south side of
Main Street, just west of Maple Street, at 11:00 a.m.
The tone of the vigil is quieter and more focused than
usual.

A contingent of the Northampton vigil will remain at
its usual place in front of the Courthouse.

"Getting Out"

Local groups are also campaigning to increase awareness
of conscientious objection, and of the options and
resources available to people who discover the military
life to be unacceptable. The 24-page booklet "Getting
Out: A Guide to Military Discharges" describes many of
these. Free copies are available at Collective Copies,
93 Main Street in Florence. A printable copy of the
booklet is also available on our web site, and an
online copy appears, along with other valuable
resources, at the web site http://www.objector.org.

FRIDAY FREE FILM SCHEDULE

Friday, June 17: Orwell Rolls in his Grave

Director Robert Kane Pappas' ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE
argues that American news media have become, like
George Orwell's "Ministry of Truth", a surreal source
of information that routinely labels things the
opposite of what they are, forgets and distorts
stories, and fabricates diversity of opinion between
essentially identical positions. The film argues by
example, tracing several recent news stories through a
process of spin and suppression.

Friday, June 24: Hijacking Catastrophe

The documentary "Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear &
the Selling of American Empire" was produced by
Northampton's own Media Education Foundation, the
organization that makes space available for this film
series. As part of the series, we are pleased to
present an updated version of "Hijacking Catastrophe".
With us will be special guest, MEF Executive Director
Sut Jhally, to present the film and answer questions.

JOIN OUR SATURDAY MORNING VIGILS! Each Saturday we hold
a vigil in downtown Northampton, in front of the County
Courthouse at King Street and Main Street, from 11 a.m.
to noon. Our vigil is silent for the first half, then
noisy for the second half. We have many signs for
people to hold, but you can also bring one of your own.
If you have one, bring a percussion instrument or an
empty pail to bang on during the second half.

WANT TO GET MORE INVOLVED? There are many ways to get
involved with the planning, direction, and specific
events of the local peace movement. If you would like
help finding an opportunity to serve, e-mail us at
info at northamptoncommittee.org.
