To the editor:
The Reminder might have noted in its coverage of the Pioneer Valley
Preservation Coalition press conference ("Coalition constructed to protest
Plant", Aug. 23) that there was one candidate for state representative in
the Third Hampden District present by the name of Owen R. Broadhurst. I can
well understand that space considerations require judicious presentation of
a reporter's voluminous notes, and must note that I'm in no way disturbed by
that omission - but it does compel me to write and take note of this for the
record.
I was indeed in attendance as a Concerned Citizens of Russell supporter. The
mere fact of my having been in attendance is worth noting, I believe, as my
very own concerns over Russell Biomass LLC - together with those of numerous
individuals I know throughout not only Montague, Westfield, Agawam and even
Boston and Cambridge - quite obviously disprove Mr. Bill Hull's specious
argument that opposition is "about the 'not in my backyard' idea". This is a
bio-regional concern promising impacts for the whole entire Pioneer Valley.
This proposed plant would draw more than 880,000 gallons from the Westfield
River daily, discharge over 100,000 gallons of heated water daily, require
more than 840 one-way diesel truck trips per week, and emit over one ton of
air pollutants per minute. If this is what Mr. Hull could in any way
describe as "safe", he uses no definition for that word that I'm familiar
with.
Sincerely yours,
Owen R. Broadhurst
