*Happy Birthday Arizona*
**
Here's something to really celebrate this February 14th.
On this day in history back in 1912 Arizona became the 48th state of the
Union. Eighty-six years later Arizona enacted a radical public campaign
finance measure, the Clean Elections Law. Today 10 out of 11 statewide
officeholders in Arizona are publicly-financed, as are 35 of the 60 House
members and 7 out of 30 Senators.
And closer to home in New Jersey, the Clean Elections Commission has just
recommended expanding the state's pilot project. Last year two legislative
districts in New Jersey experimented with public campaign financing, and
yesterday the Commission recommended expanding that number to six next year.
Here in Massachusetts, we are looking forward to the filing of our own
public campaign finance measure that would cover legislative races. For
information about how to get involved locally, see below.

*Meeting: February 23, 7:00 p.m.*
**
Ensuring that our bill becomes law involves organizing for success. So the
Western Mass Voters team will be meeting on Thursday, February 23 from 7:00
p.m. at the Mass Voters office, 256 North Pleasant Street, Suite 1, Amherst.
If you would like to come along and help plan our Western Mass activities
for March-April, please reply to this e-mail or give me a call.
Sincerely,
Peter Vickery
