To the editor:

Readers of the Springfield Republican have been subjected now for weeks to
the spectacle of several major hospital chains taking out full page ads to
propagandize against mandatory minimum staffing. The fact that Mercy Medical
Center helped pay for them is almost amusing.

My late mother was a patient in the Mercy system of hospitals when left
unattended to fall and have her right orbital fractured. I question if I can
trust a medical center failing to properly staff orderlies to properly staff
nurses. From what I can see, paltry staffing has been a very serious problem
in area hospitals and nursing facilities for quite some extraordinary length
of time.

The hospitals cite an estimated cost of some $500 million per year to
propagandize against mandatory minimum staffing. What they will not
advertise is how the costs of medical care would be dramatically reduced if
the Commonwealth would but support single payer health care.

Don't be fooled by hospital propaganda. Trust the nursing associations who
know better.

Support mandatory minimum staffing. One of your relations could be the next
injured.

Sincerely yours,
Owen R. Broadhurst, retired CNA
