PUBLIC MEETING: NO TO BUSH WAR ON IMMIGRANTS
7pm, Somatics System Institute, 32 Masonic St, Northampton. Public
meeting of Northampton Branch of the International Socialist Organization
(ISO) to dispel the lies about immigrants and to discuss how the working
class can fight back against the racist guest-worker program and the
militarization of the Mexican border - by building a grassroots,
multi-racial movement from below. ISO calls for amnesty now for undocumented
workers and full equality, union rights, and civil rights for all. Info:
mailto:annie at zirin.com.

RALLY TO SUPPORT ST VINCENT'S WORKERS
3pm, St Vincent Hospital, near DCU Center, 123 Summer St, Worcester
(http://www.stvincenthospital.com/aboutUs/MapsAndDirections). It took St.
Vincent Hospital workers a YEAR to win the right to bargain. It's taken
ANOTHER YEAR for the company to agree to bargain in good faith! They've been
patient long enough! Come to a rally to support St Vincent Hospital
healthcare workers in their fight for a first contract. They help others
every day - now it's our turn to help them! If you cannot make the rally,
please send a letter, asking St Vincent Hospital to bargain in good faith,
to John Smithhisler, President & CEO, St Vincent Hospital, Worcester MA
01608. Info: Jobs with Justice, mailto:jwj at massjwj.net.

Monday June 5
WHAT THE H.E.C.?! RALLY & MARCH
3pm, rally at HEC Central offices, 97 Hawley St, Northampton (headed
into Northampton on Pleasant St, take a right on Holyoke St and a left onto
Hawley St), march to Pulaski Park on Main St. Please join the UAW Local 2322
members of Hampshire Educational Collaborative (HEC) to support their
campaign for a fair contract with fair wages. UAW and HEC have been in
contract negotiations for over a year and HEC has thus far has not made an
offer for defined wages, instead offering a proposal incorporating "fuzzy"
math that does not guarantee annual raises for the majority of workers. UAW
HEC members provide services to some of the most needy, difficult, and
demanding students in the region. Those students come to HEC because
districts they live in can not provide those services. Info: Ron Patenaude,
534-7600, mailto:uaw2322 at uaw2322.org.

BUILDING A WMASS SOCIAL FORUM - POTLUCK!
5:30pm, potluck dinner/meeting, Nuestras Raices' new farm at Jones
Ferry Road, Holyoke (if rain: Nuestras Raices office, 329 Main St, Holyoke)
(www.nuestras-raices.org/directions.htm). "Another World Is Possible." This
is the slogan of the World Social Forum. Since its first meeting Brazil in
2001, the World Social Forum has become the largest gathering of social
movements in the world. The Social Forum is united in its opposition to
neoliberalism (the dominant economic model: "free" markets, "free" trade,
minimal government, privatization, deregulation) and imperialism, and in its
commitment to building "another world" grounded in sustainability and social
justice. There have been numerous regional social forums throughout the
world, including one in Boston in 2004. A local group of activists is
exploring the idea of holding a Social Forum in Western Mass.

       S.2535 HEARING - TESTIFIERS NEEDED
1pm, State House, Boston. Have you faced hardship taking time off
from work to care for a spouse, child, or elderly relative? Could you have
benefited from paid family emergency leave? Mass Senior Action Council
(MSAC) is seeking one or two people to testify in favor of a paid family and
medical leave act. This bill, introduced by State Senate President
Travaglini, would provide fully paid leave up to $750 a week for a maximum
of twelve weeks for all Massachusetts workers, both public and private. The
bill still needs work to make it effective for low wage workers and those
who have had to change jobs frequently, and MSAC is working to see that
changes are made. There is strong support in the Senate but not in the House
at present. Testimony on the importance of this act to Massachusetts workers
and their relatives will be important in creating an effective law. Info, to
testify: John Bennett, 786-3741.

Thursday June 8

buildings. It is easy for everyone to access sustainable and affordable
energy sources. Clean, efficient energy use is standard practice. Family
farms and locally owned businesses are the backbone of our communities and
we have what we need to provide for our future. Info: Deb Katz, 339-5781,

STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING EFFECTIVE DEMOCRACY IN THE FACE OF CORPORATE
HEGEMONY
7pm, Unitarian Universalist Society of Northampton and Florence, 220
Main St, Northampton. The story of a California County's struggle for local
control, with featured speaker David Cobb, fresh from Measure T, a
California ballot initiative barring outside corporate money from Humboldt
County elections. It is a challenge to the 1978 US Supreme Court decision
(Bellotti v First National Bank of Boston) that overturned a Massachusetts
law forbidding corporate funding of issue-oriented referenda. The landmark
Bellotti case played a major role in defining the legality of corporate
political spending and supporting the legal doctrine that a corporation must
be treated as a "person" with vested constitutional rights. While striking
down the Massachusetts statute, the Supreme Court also declared that it
would have considered arguments against corporate spending if there had been
evidence showing that corporate advocacy imminently threatened to undermine
democratic processes. Info: Shays 2,
