End Military Arms to Local Police

END MILITARY ARMS TO LOCAL POLICE The Massachusetts Green-Rainbow Party has joined with other organizations in demanding that the Biden Administration stop militarizing our local law enforcement officers. President Joe Biden has stated on January 26, 2021, that he intends to reinstate the modest restrictions of President Barack Obama on the notorious Department of Defense's 1033 program which provides military equipment including tanks and grenade launchers to local police. Lois Gagnon, a Co-Chair of the GRP, joins with the Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) and other organizations, to reject President Joe Biden’s executive order to alter the 1033 program because his supposed commitment to racial justice is an affront. For almost a quarter of a century, the 1033 program has transferred "surplus" military equipment and vehicles to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. It was established by the 1997 National Defense Authorization ACT. Over 8000 law enforcement agencies have been the recipients of such tools of violence as armored tanks, weaponized aircraft, pipe bomb materials, and high-powered guns. The Green-Rainbow Party stands with more than 80 other organizations in demanding an end to this unsafe and ineffective Program and its removal from the Defense Authorization Act.

Real Solutions for Our Current Crisis, New Possibilities for Our Future

Green-Rainbow Party Co-Chairs’ Statement:  April 26, 2020: We are living in a time of escalating crisis: pandemic, environmental collapse, perpetual wars, and an economic and political system incapable of meeting the needs of the people. This shocking reality has been decades in the making. The Democratic and Republican Parties long ago abandoned working people to serve the wealthy 1%. They cannot lead us to a better future. We urgently need a government that leads by listening to those who are suffering the most, and understands we are all connected. For this to happen, local, state, and national officials must be independent of the corporate parties and oceans of ‘dark money,’ that continue to block positive system change. Continue reading
